when noblewomen try to refuse an arranged marriage, it’s always because the man is “fat, old, and ugly.”
someday i will write a princess refusing to marry a young and beautiful prince because he’s cruel and stupid. choosing instead to marry a king who is fat, old, and ugly, but also sensible and a good statesman, because she knows her marriage is a political alliance and she can always get her jollies with pretty courtiers if it comes to that. “my petticoats are full of politics,” she will say. “my royal booty is much too important to waste on handsome jerks.”
the business of getting an heir is awkward, because her husband tends to act like an indulgent uncle and that’s not at all sexy. but he’s happy to mentor her in statecraft, knowing his age means he’ll leave her in an awkward position. when he does die, they’ve solidified her standing enough that she can rule in her own right.
her second marriage is for love. as a stately middle-aged queen, she can marry prince charming, and make him prince consort rather than king. his gentle nature makes him a fine diplomat, and he’s not inclined to try taking power.
her daughter, raised by political maestros, never marries at all. she handles power with such a deft hand that she can name a well-educated cousin as heir and take him to apprentice without more than token grumblings from the nobility.
and that, i say, closing the storybook, is how our kingdom came to elect its royalty from a pool of candidates based on aptitude scores. now go to sleep.
“her daughter, raised by political maestros, never marries at all. she handles power with such a deft hand that she can name a well-educated cousin as heir and take him to apprentice without more than token grumblings from the nobility.“
so…her daughter was Elizabeth I?
A small guide I put together on the topic of sailing.
If, as a DM, you just want to abstract sea voyages to “ok you get on the boat and one week later arrive at the destination”, this is probably not for you. This is more for “my players want to buy/steal a boat and have sea adventures and I don’t know what a wind is”.
If you want to do anything more serious or in-depth than this you should probably do proper research online, this is mostly just meant as a vague guideline.
Still, on the topic of sea travels and explorations, I think that establishing prevailing winds, trade routes, and such can bring a decent amount of worldbuilding to the table.
If you manage to make a player say “We can’t set sail right now. We need the winds to shift first.” completely on his own, then you made him feel like a old badass sailor who knows the seven seas like the back of his hand.
That’s worth something.
Problem 1: “Death at 0 HP is all too sudden and too deadly for me”
Problem 2: ”Death at -10 HP is too predictable, players can easily make guesses as to how long until characters die and act around it, there’s nothing shocking and unexpected about being at -1 and SLOOOWLY bleeding our until -10 or until rescued. Feels like I was knocked out by a nerf bat rather than stabbed by a sharp and dangerous sword.”
Problem 3: “There’s spells like Regenerate and Cure Blindness to restore limbs and body parts, but there’s very little that specifically inflicts that kind of damage in the game. These spells don’t see that much use and it’s a shame.”
Problem 4: “I like the idea of a character being forced to retire by a serious wound or loss of a limb. Like, you don’t adventure ‘till you’re dead. Old retired adventurers can become NPCs and mentor the new characters and I think that that’s a cool thing that doesn’t happen as often as I’d like.”
Problem 5: “I just want to fuck my players up. Like, big time. Also extreme descriptions of violence are hilarious to me.”
Here’s your solution! Have a fancy Death & Dismemberment table for Dungeons & Dragons to make your players justly terrified of being near or at 0 HP.
(Please note that there definitely are vastly better Death&Dismemberment tables out there and this is just my take on the subject.)
(Also please note that this was written with AD&D1e in mind, but it’s really pretty universal for most editions I think.)
